14 Bat Species Call Idaho Home
Idaho supports one of the most diverse bat communities in the American West, with 14 confirmed species ranging from the tiny Western Small-footed Myotis to the spectacular Spotted Bat. Understanding which species is in your home helps determine the right removal strategy, the correct timing for exclusion, and any special conservation considerations that apply.
Our Idaho Bat Species Guide covers every species found in the state — appearance, behavior, habitat, roosting habits, and what their presence in a structure means for you.

Signs You Have Bats in Your Home
- 🔊Scratching or squeaking sounds from your attic, walls, or ceiling — especially at dusk and dawn when bats exit and re-enter
- 💩Bat droppings (guano) beneath your eaves, on windowsills, or accumulating on attic floors — guano crumbles to powder when pressed
- 🟤Dark grease stains or rub marks around small gaps in your siding, eaves, or fascia where bats repeatedly squeeze through
- 🦇Bats emerging from your roofline at dusk — watch for their silhouettes against the evening sky above your eaves or chimney
- 💨Strong ammonia odor from your attic or walls — especially noticeable in warm weather as guano concentration increases
- 😱A single bat inside your living space — often a sign a larger colony is roosting inside the structure above you
If you notice any of these signs, do not wait. The longer a colony occupies your home, the more guano accumulates and the more expensive the cleanup. Call us now: 801-633-8007
Frequently Asked Questions
Is bat removal legal in Idaho?
Yes. We perform all work in full compliance with Idaho Fish & Game regulations. Bats are protected wildlife and must be removed using humane exclusion methods — no trapping or poisons. We know the regulations and handle all compliance.
When is the best time to remove bats?
The ideal times for bat exclusion in Idaho are early spring (before pups are born) and late summer/fall (after pups become flightless). We cannot exclude bats in June–July when flightless pups are present. We will assess your situation and recommend the correct timing.
How did bats get into my house?
Bats can enter through gaps as small as 3/8 of an inch. Common entry points include ridge caps, gaps at the fascia-soffit junction, roof vents, gable vents, chimney flashings, and utility penetrations. We locate every entry point during our inspection.
Is bat guano dangerous?
Yes. Accumulated bat guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum — a fungal pathogen that causes histoplasmosis when inhaled. Do not disturb guano yourself. Our crews use proper PPE and EPA-registered decontaminants to safely remove and neutralize all biological material.
Do you warrant your work?
Yes — every exclusion job is fully warranted. If bats re-enter through any point we sealed, we return and correct it at no charge. This warranty applies to every job we complete across all of Idaho.
